Deep fat fryer suspected in Greektown fire
CHICAGO -
Bartender Paul Kret was locking up Costa's Greek Dining and Bar in Greektown before successful cuttingly Sunday eventide when he smelled something ablaze.
Kret turned back to the scullery and saw grievous smoke engulfing the chamber. Kret grabbed a negligible fire extinguisher, sprayed it and hoped for a minute he had put it out. But when he saw flames, he fled and called 911 about 11:35 p.m. By morning, the whole edifice was destroyed.
"I didn't even get my cover," Kret said this morning as he looked at the gutted construction at 340 S. Halsted St.
